Reimers, Sherwood advance in match play

Albany's Hans Reimers and Nick Sherwood won their opening matches of match play in the Oregon Amateur Championship golf tournament Wednesday at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Reimers, the 20th seed after 36 holes of stroke play, defeated 45th seed Billy Anderson of Eugene 3 and 2.

He faced Justin Smithhisler of Roseburg in this morning's round of 32. The round of 16 will be played this afternoon.

Sherwood, seeded 17th, got past 49th seed Philip Bagdade of Eugene 4 and 3.

He was matched with Nick Chianello of Gresham this morning.

Reimers and Sherwood are both 2009 West Albany High School graduates and helped the Bulldogs to consecutive 5A state titles.

Albany's Eli Mendez competed Wednesday in the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge, played at Forest Hills Golf Club in Cornelius.

Mendez placed in a tie for fifth in the 16-17 age division of the two-round event with a score of 70-78-148.

Connor Magnuson of Albany finished in a tie for 47th in that division with a score of 77-86-163.

In the boys 14-15 division, Conner Kumpula of Albany tied for fifth at 76-75-151.

In the 12-13 boys division, Chace Daskalos of Albany was 20th with a score of 93-94-187.

Jaxson Daskalos of Albany won the boys 8-11 division with a score of 43-41-84.
