SCIO - Scio coach Jayme McDaniel had it pegged. Everyone did what they had to do Tuesday in the 2A/1A state softball quarterfinal game on the Lady Logger field.

The way it worked out, visiting Weston-McEwen did its job just a wee bit better. Using solid defense and some alert base running the TigerScots claimed a 3-0 win and moved on to the state semifinals before a large crowd that stretched down both sidelines.

"We did what we were supposed to do and they did what they were supposed to do," McDaniel said following the loss. "They did a job on us defensively."

Indeed, Weston-McEwen's defense proved the real difference in the game. In a classic pitcher's duel, the TigerScots escaped an aggressive Lady Logger attack.

"We wanted to come out aggressive and apply pressure," said McDaniel.

In that respect there was no disappointment. In fact, the aggressive effort may have cost Scio, at least on the base paths.

Twice Logger rallies were thwarted when runners were doubled off base after hard-hit line drives to the infield. It would be hard to find fault with that kind of mistake.

Both times the balls were stung, first by Cierra Summerlin and then by LeAnna Elliott. The runners, looking for an opportunity, were easily picked off.

Still, it was early defensive problems that were the real culprit for Scio. Two first-inning errors with two out led to the game's first run when Oshana Sampson, who had doubled down the line, moved to third on one and scored on the other.

"Unearned runs were the difference really," McDaniel said.

Another error on a foul that would have ended the inning in the third kept things alive for the TigerScots who eventually scored on a delayed steal of home.

The miscues ruined a superb pitching performance by all-league hurler Alicia Beresford. She allowed only five hits - three of them infield hits - and struckout four in her final performance for the Logger girls.

Scio managed just one runner to scoring position. Leadoff hitter Maranda Eaton doubled to open the fourth and moved to third on a perfect sacrifice by Courtney Baggett.

Weston-McEwen pitcher Karissa Griggs worked her way out of the jam retired number three hitter Summerlin on popout and cleanup hitter Beresford on a bouncer back to the mound.

Earlier Scio had threatened and appeared to have evened the score in the second inning after Beresford's line single led things off.

She took off for second and raced all the way home when the catcher's throw sailed into center but a batter's interference negated the run.

Eaton finished with two hits to lead Scio's four-hit effort.

Despite the loss McDaniel was pleased with her team and its solid season.

"It's been a great year for these girls. They put in a lot of time, a lot of dedication and a lot of heart and it paid off," said the coach.

Scio, which finished the season at 15-9 overall and 13-5 as the District 3 number two seed, loses only three starters from the team.

Weston-McEwen moves on the the semifinals on Tuesday at home against Nestucca, a 1-0 winner over District 3 top seed, Blanchet.
