Everything came a little harder Friday night than it had all season.

But West Albany still got the job done.

The No. 1 Bulldogs took the best shot from another ranked team - this time No. 7 Corvallis - and came away with a 33-14 Mid-Willamette Conference win.

West (6-0, 3-0 league) got its second straight regular-season victory against the Spartans, bracketing a 17-14 triple overtime loss to Corvallis in last year's 5A state championship game.

Friday, West junior quarterback Reese Miller ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. The Bulldog defense held its own against a solid Spartan offense.

"We've done a good job of taking each week at a time and not looking forward to big games like this," said West junior receiver Elliott O'Bryan, who caught a 33-yard Miller pass for the Bulldogs' final score.

Corvallis (3-3, 2-1) slowed the West run attack. Enough to force the Bulldogs into more passing plays but not enough to keep West out of the end zone.

Sophomore Anthony LaCoste finished with 75 yards on 20 attempts. Junior Matt McHenry had 53 on 14 tries and Miller 38 on seven.

Miller was 4 of 9 passing for 112 yards and the touchdown.

"Give (the Spartans) credit, they did some good stuff. They did a great job playing our run game and we found some other ways to move the football and be productive offensively," West coach Randy Nyquist said.

On defense, West held Corvallis running back Chris Henry to 62 yards on 19 carries. Thirty-six of those came on the Spartans' final drive.

Senior Will Murphy provided one of the biggest plays of the game when he intercepted a pass from Kevin Younger deep in Bulldog territory late in the second quarter with West leading 19-7.

The Spartans were looking to answer the Bulldogs with a score of their own after West had extended its lead on a McHenry 2-yard run.

Corvallis reached the West 17 in the final minute of the half on a 23-yard pass from Younger to Daryl Watkins.

After a spiked ball to stop the clock, Murphy bit on a Younger pass and caught it in stride, returning it 52 yards to the Corvallis 34.

"We've been watching them on film and coach was saying 'watch the outs, watch the outs,' " said Murphy, who had two catches for 68 yards on offense. "I got a jump, and everybody else was playing great coverage."

West junior Tyler George was short on a 51-yard field goal as time expired, but Murphy's interception allowed the Bulldogs to keep the momentum.

"That was a pretty big play," Nyquist said. "They were going down to score and we picked it."

George's 21-yarder in the second quarter gave West a 9-0 lead. He was also perfect on four extra points.

The West defense came up big in the third quarter after Corvallis had reached the Bulldog 8, thanks in large part to a 22-yard run by Nate Williams on a fake punt.

West senior linebacker Scot Foss knocked down a second-down pass then sacked Younger for 11 yards on the next play.

Corvallis kicker Ian Shute then missed a 35-yard field goal wide left and short.

The Bulldogs ended any hope the Spartans might have had in the fourth quarter on O'Bryan's touchdown with 7:22 remaining.

O'Bryan found himself all alone down the right sideline at about 10, waiting for Miller's toss. O'Bryan easily found the end zone.

"I took about five steps and the corner bit up on it, and Reese threw a good ball," O'Bryan said.

Next week, with games played on Thursday due to the state school inservice, West travels to Crescent Valley and Corvallis hosts Lebanon.
