West Albany droppped its first game of the season to No. 3 Hermiston in Friday's opener of the Sherwood Yuletide Shootout.

Hermiston won 68-37.

After starting the game with a 6-0 lead, West surrendered 17 consecutive points to finish the first quarter and they continued to struggle with 28 turnovers.

Deijonae Slade led the Bulldogs with 11 points.

"We definitely have got a ways to go," said West Albany coach Craig Swanson. "Hermiston's a good team and they took advantage of our mistakes, but we've got a chance to regroup and I'm confident that we will."

West Albany (6-1) plays the loser of the Sherwood and The Dalles contest at 1:30 p.m. today.

Tiffany Bartlett scored 10 points and Amy Trower tallied five assists and five steals as South Albany played tough against the Jaguars but could not pull out a victory.

The bench kept the Rebels in the game.

"Chloe Mitchell and Taylor Mangan were great sparks off the bench in the second quarter," said Rebels coach Phil Smith.

South Albany (0-7) hosts Churchill on Tuesday.

The Huskies could not find their first win of the season, but they stayed close in a loss to visiting Sisters.

"When we can compete with Sisters then that is a good night," said Huskies coach Dave Goetz.

Jenny Hamn scored 16 for Sweet Home. She was the only player on either team in double figures.

Sweet Home (0-6) plays today at Gladstone.

The Eagles survived a lean fourth quarter with strong second and third quarters to win by two over host Blanchet.

Shauna Detweiler scored a game-high 14 points to go with 11 rebounds.

"We picked-up a big win tonight," said Eagles coach T.J. Garber. "We did a lot of things right in the third and fourth which allowed us to hold on."

East Linn Christian (4-2, 2-0) will host Monroe tonight to open its new A.R.C. gymnasium in a rescheduled game.

Hermiston 76, West Albany 66

Despite four players reaching double-figures in scoring, West Albany could not overcome a 25-9 first quarter deficit as they lost their sixth straight game to start the season.

Jesse Strickland led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points while adding four assists.

"Hermiston got off to a great start," said West coach Todd Zimmermann. "I did see some real positive things, though, and I saw what we are capable of doing the rest of the season."

West Albany (0-6) will play the loser of the Sherwood versus The Dalles in the Sherwood Tournament at 3:15 today.

Erik Van Kuelen scored 22 to lead the Rebels.

It was a tale of two halves for the Eagles and host Blanchet as the Kruesi brothers, Michael and Kyle, combined for 50 of East Linn's 65 points.

Blanchet's Pascal Heinrics made seven 3-pointers on his way to 29 total points while they missed only seven total shots in the half to outscore the Eagles 48-29.

"We shot well in the first half and they just shot well in the second half," said East Linn coach Jim Hill.

"We're a team that has to force teams to shoot from the perimeter and they just happened to put them in."

East Linn Christian (2-4, 1-1) will host Monroe tonight in their new Activities Recourse Center tonight at 5:30 p.m.
