Track and field

East Linn Christian senior Caleb Goins had a big weekend at the Tri-River Conference district track and field meet at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Goins won the 1,500 and 3,000 meters and helped the Eagles run the 2A state-leading mark in the 1,600 relay (3 minutes, 34.3 seconds) and finish fifth overall.

Scio junior Wyatt Briggs set a PR of 141 feet, 2 inches in the discus and helped the Loggers clock 2A's best time in the 400 relay.

Scio was fourth overall.

The top two finishers in each event and those meeting qualifying standards advance to the 2A state meet, beginning Friday at Western Oregon.

East Linn Christian sophmore Hannah Whitehead won the 400 and was second in the triple jump as the Eagles finished seventh.

Scio sophomore Caitlyn Hoefer won the 100 high hurdles, was second in the 300 low hurdles and helped the Loggers take second in the 400 relay.

Scio sophomore Sami DeVore won the javelin, while sophomore teammate Laiken Pearson was the winner in the high jump with a personal-best 4-10.

Scio was fifth overall.

West Albany 6, Cascade 3

After clinching the Mid-Willamette co-championship with Silverton on Friday, the host Bulldogs took out 4A Cascade in a non-league contest Monday.

Following her five inning no-hitter against South Albany, Kristin Warner struck out five Cascade batters to help earn her 18th victory of the season.

West received an offensive boost from underclassmen at the bottom of the order as freshman No. 9 hitter Kiley Bussard drove in two rund on a second inning double.

The No. 8 batter, sophomore Courtney Martin, went 2 for 3 while making two over-the-should grabsand added an assist on a double play from right field.

"We wanted a warm-up, tune-up game before state and (Cascade had) two very good pitchers they threw against us. And they can hit the ball well too," said Bulldogs coach Rocky Erner.

"They made my defense do some work tonight and they (responded) really well.)"

West Albany (18-6-1, 17-4) will face No. 1 PIL seed Cleveland in Portland on May 20.

Sweet Home 10th

after first round

Sweet Home shot a 363 on the first day of the 4A state boys golf tournament at the Emerald Valley Golf Club Monday in Creswell.

Marist and Phoenix lead the two-day event after each team shot 315.

Taylor Huschka had the best first-day round for the Huskies, posting a 79.
