Corvallis High boys basketball coach Greg Garrison said the Spartans' trademark this season has been to jump on their opponents from the opening tip.

The style has Corvallis ranked third in the Associated Press poll.

With No. 7 Silverton coming to town on Monday evening with designs on first in the Mid-Willamette Conference, the Spartans wanted another quick start.

They got it, turning on a suffocating defense and rolling to a 61-28 win over the Foxes.

"It's kind of been our trademark all year is getting other teams on their heels," Garrison said. "I thought we did a great job of that tonight. To come out and dominate their offense is pretty satisfying."

The Spartans (14-1) led 30-11 at the half.

"To hold them 11 points at halftime was a pretty special night for our guys," Garrison said.

The Spartans did it by pressuring the ball, disrupting the passing lanes and forcing turnovers. Silverton had 22 turnovers to CHS' six.

"So that was a big difference-maker for us," Garrison said. "I thought we did a great job of ball pressure and took them out of their rhythm."

Nadav Heyman was a key defender for the Spartans, shutting down the Foxes' top player and finishing with three steals and five assists to go with eight points.

Scott Campbell led CHS with 18 points.

Corvallis plays host to Dallas on Friday.

SILVERTON n A tough third quarter made the difference as Corvallis High lost a 49-37 Mid-Willamette Conference game at Silverton on Monday.

The Spartans (7-9, 2-3) trailed 20-19 at the half but could not keep up the pace in the third and were outscored 18-10.

The Foxes dominated the offensive boards, resulting in quite a few shot attempts.

"We didn't come out with the same intensity that we left halftime with," CHS coach Scott Lasswell said.

Lasswell said the Spartans played hard and had a strong effort throughout the game, but struggled in crucial situations.

The Spartans worked back to within five or six points several times in the second half, but too often ended up giving up turnovers to stop the run.

"We'd get a stop and then turn around and give it right back to them," Lasswell said. "I bet we had 10 unforced turnovers, which are killers."
