Colts rout Sherwood for 3rd

EUGENE - Drew Wiley scored 18 points as the Thurston High Colts put disappointment in the past Saturday afternoon, defeating Sherwood 66-42 to claim the third-place trophy at the 5A boys basketball tournament.

Sixth-ranked Thurston (22-7) fell to Corvallis in the semifinals Friday afternoon 46-39. Less than 24 hours later the Colts took the floor at McArthur Court against the Bowmen, who were blown out by No. 2 Jefferson in the other semifinal.

Thurston opened the game on an 8-0 run and never trailed. The Colts led 33-20 at the half and 55-29 entering the fourth quarter. They led by as many as 29.

Michael Akins added 12 points for the Colts, who shot 56.5 percent from the field.

Wiley, who is headed to Oregon for basketball, made 50 percent of his shots, including 4 of 8 3-point tries.

Sherwood (17-12) was paced by guard Ian Donovan with 12 points. Connor Rumpf added 11 and Travis Lutes had 10.

Fourth place

Hermiston built a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, then held North Eugene at bay to claim the fourth-place trophy with a 49-44 victory.

The Bulldogs (21-6) forced the 2007 5A champions into 34.9 percent shooting. North Eugene (25-4) made just 3 of 16 3-pointers (18.8 percent).

The Highlanders, who entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in 5A, finished in sixth place with their second loss in four days.

J.J. Ross led all scorers with 18 points for Hermiston, while Sam Grogan added 10 and Luis Ortiz had nine.

North Eugene was paced by Brian Conklin with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
