Progress is being made, though the results are coming slowly.

South Albany remained winless Friday with a 52-28 loss to Roseburg in a consolation game of the Pink Ribbon Shootout girls basketball tournament at West Albany High School.

But coach Phil Smith saw improvement in his team and is hopeful

"They did a lot of positive things today. They played with a lot of heart," Smith said.

With a solid defensive effort using a zone trap, the Rebels (0-10) trailed just 12-8 after the first quarter.

They also cut their turnovers from 41 in an 82-35 loss Thursday to Liberty of Hillsboro to 16 against Roseburg. The Indians (2-6) also had 16 turnovers Friday.

South found patience on offense against the Indians' zone.

"We didn't shoot very well, but it was definitely the most shots we've put up in a game," Smith said. "We talked to them about competing, not only that but just playing the game and having fun with it.

"Today they just relaxed, they caught the ball and passed the ball and put the ball up a lot."

Roseburg grabbed a big lead in the second quarter with an 18-3 points advantage, though little came from the Indians' set offense.

The Indians scored six off offensive rebounds, four from steals and seven off other transition opportunities.

A pair of 3-pointers by freshman Haley Dixon helped keep South even with Roseburg in the third quarter, with the Indians having a 14-13 edge.

Scoring was hard to come by in the fourth, with just 12 total points scored.

Smith said his team is persevering the season so far but moving forward.

"It's a really positive group and a great group of girls," he said. "They just need to find a little confidence and they'll get going."

Junior Halie Bethards, Dixon and senior Sharayah Lehman led the Rebels with six points apiece.

Senior Tiffany Bartlett added four rebounds and four blocks, and junior Taylor Brown had three points and five assists.

South Albany will play Enumclaw, Wash., at 1 p.m. today.

Because the Rebels have already Springfield (Enumclaw's opponent Friday), South would have played Enumclaw regardless of the Washington team's results Friday after the Rebels' loss.

Enumclaw defeated Springfield 30-28 Friday.

South opens Mid-Willamette Conference play Jan. 8 hosting Silverton.
