Win and you're in.

With both Corvallis and host South Albany entering Friday's game at 3-3 in conference play, the whole season came down to the Mid-Willamette finale as the Spartans put the Rebels away 30-13 to take the fourth and final seed in the 5A state playoffs.

Behind the running of junior tailback Dominic Wooten, Corvallis established its ground game early. The Spartans scored on both of its opening possessions to take a 10-0 lead on two 11-play scoring drives while the Rebels amassed just six plays on offense in the first quarter.

Fullback Lane Stutzman, who replaced younger brother Bryce due to a lingering knee injury, took over the ball-carrying duties in the South backfield and led two touchdown drives to help the Rebels take a 13-10 lead while the defense forced Corvallis into two three-and-outs and preserve the advantage going into the half.

"I've been waiting for that all year," said Lane Stutzman of his opportunity to be the team's featured back.

"I knew I had a good chance of running the ball with my brother's injury last week and I knew I had to be ready if I was called on."

The senior filled in admirably in his final high school game, rushing for 136 yards on 28 carries. But Corvallis combated Stutzman's effort with its own workhorse as Wooten took the ball 29 times for 257 of the Spartans' 302 yards rushing.

"I thought they played real physical game. Obviously, when you have a guy like Wooten ... and you've got one of those guys you can go to all the time, you are always going to be in the game," said South Albany coach Tony Matta. "In the second half we were playing hard but we were thin in bodies and I was worried about guys getting dinged up out there."

After a 13-point second quarter, the Rebels were shut out the rest of the way.

Following quarterback Ross Orman's 1-yard quarterback sneak into the end zone, South fumbled the ensuing kickoff before Wooten put the game away with his third scoring run of the night.

Matta credits much of his team's turnaround over the last two seasons to the effort that Lane Stutzman and the other 19 seniors have made in their time at South Albany.

"You ask Lane to step up and he does whatever you ask. He is one of those type of kids and those are the kind of kids you like to be around. This whole group has really come through. They work hard and a big part of us making the playoffs last year is (this class)," said Matta after a the team's final postgame huddle.

"Those seniors can hold their heads up. They represented us with heart and they played hard. That is all we can ask of them."
