After a long winter break, the South Albany swim teams returned to the pool on Tuesday and were swept by Corvallis despite strong efforts from Johnny Beamer in the boys competition and Stacie Struble on the girls side.

Beamer took first in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while Daniel Struble won in the 100 freestyle race.

Stacie Struble was a part of both of the girls' victories, setting a new personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.88, and teaming as the front leg of the 200 freestyle relay.

"The score does not really represent how well the kids swam. After the hard Christmas break practices, we had several breakthrough swims," said South Albany coach Nancy Roehrich. "(Our performance was) very encouraging for districts. (We) need to start working on those little things now the base is there."

Girls basketball

Regis 44, Jefferson 30

Aly Hammond led the Lions with 12 points in Tuesday's game at Regis, but Jefferson fell behind early and could not make up 15-point halftime deficit.

"Regis played very aggressively on their made baskets ... It came down to a game of possessions and they kept taking ours," said Jefferson coach Scott Ziegler. "In some small ways it was a step forward for us. We played together, we fought through adversity, we continued to battle for four quarters. We'll need to keep running the marathon of the PacWest season, and that starts tomorrow."

Jefferson plays at Santiam Christian at 7:30 p.m. today.
