Scio played one of the earliest prep football games in the state, opening its season with a 36-22 loss at Oakridge Thursday night.
Coach Kyle Braa said the early kickoff definitely had an impact on the result.
"We played eight days earlier than we usually do," Braa said, adding that the lack of practice resulted in his team not being as well-conditioned as he would have liked for the opener. "I thought a lot of kids were working hard out there, but we can definitely improve."
On the positive side, Braa said his team committed only two penalties. Still, there were more mental breakdowns than he would have liked.
Oakridge quarterback Jake Boyd threw for 122 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 13 times for 119 yards and two scores.
Scio's Coulter Mastenbroek gained 101 yards rushing on 18 attempts and scored two touchdowns.
Scio (0-1) will host Monroe next Friday in another non-conference contest.
