YAMHILL n Ben Motter made key plays late in the fourth to help the Philomath High boys basketball team to a 42-40 upset win over top-ranked Yamhill-Carlton on Wednesday.
Motter hit one of two free throws to give No. 4 PHS (9-3) a 41-40 lead and then blocked a Y-C shot en route to the win.
The Warriors hit another free throw and switched from zone to man-to-man defense on Y-C's final possession. Instead of a shot by Zach Anderson, the Tigers had to settle for a 3-point attempt and missed.
"They didn't know what to do with it and it took the shot out of their best player's hands," PHS coach Blake Ecker said. "We've been playing pretty well. We did a great job up in Ketchikan and then to come down and knock off the number one team in the state is a great springboard into league."
The Warriors play at Sweet Home on Friday.

PORTLAND n The Raiders struggled on offense in the nonleague loss.
CV (2-7) has had a hard time getting its offense working well this season and hit 13 of 43 shots against Roosevelt.
"We had some poor shots and other guys passing up shots, which led to a poor shooting performance," CV coach Mike Stair said. "We're close to where want to de defensively, but offensively there's still a lot to be desired."
